Export, ownership, and the exit you plan on day one
Both products market that you own what you build, with plan-dependent export and visibility. Still:
- Free/public workspaces are the wrong place for secrets and customer data.
- Platform services (hosted DB, auth, cron, file storage) may not travel cleanly when you leave.
- A successful prototype creates migration work — that is success, not betrayal.
- Read terms for model-provider rights and private project rules before the demo that raises money.

When neither is the right tool
Use neither Replit nor Lovable as your forever engineering home when:
- The codebase already exists and quality bars are professional.
- You need CI, code review, monorepo tooling, and long-lived architecture.
- You are doing security-sensitive work with strict data boundaries.
- You want unlimited cheap autocomplete in JetBrains/VS Code — that is GitHub Copilot.
- You want the strongest agent-in-repo loop — Claude Code or Cursor Agent.
- You want multi-vendor agents in one desktop — Devin Desktop.

“Builder → IDE” graduation path we recommend
- Validate in Lovable or Replit (pick from table above).
- Freeze product learnings (screens, entities, what users did).
- Rebuild or import into git-hosted repo.
- Daily drive with Cursor / Claude Code / Copilot.
- Keep Replit/Lovable only if the hosted shape still fits ops — many teams do not.
That graduation is normal. Staying forever on a prototype platform out of sunk cost is the failure mode.

Security and privacy (both cloud)
Both are cloud-by-design. Before anything sensitive:
- Private projects / paid plans as required.
- No production secrets in prompts or public apps.
- Read current vendor security docs (they change).
- If policy forbids the boundary, stop shopping this category.

Path A — Lovable → local agents
- Validate UI and flows in Lovable until users stop bouncing on basics.
- Freeze a short product memo (entities, statuses, what not to build).
- Rebuild in git with Cursor or Claude Code.
- Keep the Lovable URL only as a historical demo if needed.
Best when the learning was product, not environment.
Path B — Replit → dedicated hosting
- Prototype and early users on Replit Agent.
- Export source; re-home database and auth deliberately.
- Daily drive with Copilot/Cursor/Claude Code against the exported repo.
- Retire Replit hosting when ops requires it — not when someone “feels guilty.”

Path C — Stay
Some internal tools and teaching projects should stay. Forever-home anxiety is real only when you have scale, compliance, or multi-team engineering needs. Do not migrate for Twitter aesthetics.
Path D — Skip both

- Do you already have a real repo and local setup? → Cursor / Claude Code / Copilot. Stop.
- Is the goal a clickable web narrative this week? → Lovable first.
- Is the goal learn-to-build or multi-file backend in-browser? → Replit first.
- Will this hold customer data soon? → Procurement + probably neither free tier.
- Are you allergic to credit meters? → Prefer flat tools (Copilot/Cursor) after a tiny free experiment only.
- Still unsure? Spend one afternoon on each free tier with the same brief; keep the one that produced a clearer demo with less thrash.
