Most comparisons of a free tool against a paid one turn into an argument about whether the paid one is worth it. This one has a stranger shape, because you cannot currently buy Kimi’s paid tier at all.
Moonshot paused new paid subscriptions in July 2026 after demand outran its GPU capacity, and the tiers have shown as sold out since. Existing subscribers kept their plans and places are said to reopen in batches, with no date attached. So the real question is not “which subscription”, it is whether Kimi’s free tier — which is unusually capable, with unlimited standard chat, document uploads and browsing — covers what you need.
Where it does not, the gap is rarely raw capability. It is two other things. Jurisdiction: Kimi processes data under Chinese law, which for client, regulated or NDA-bound work is usually decided above your head. And prose: Claude is the better writer, which is what people are actually paying $20 a month for.
Claude’s own catch is worth knowing before you subscribe. Its cap is a five-hour rolling window shared across web, mobile and Claude Code, not a monthly quota, and long threads cost more per message because the whole conversation is reprocessed each turn. That single fact explains most of the frustration people report with it.
