The short answer

DeepSeek if cost is the constraint: the entire chat product is free with no paid consumer tier at all, and it is strong at reasoning and code. Claude if the writing has to be good or the material is confidential — DeepSeek processes data under Chinese jurisdiction, and for client or regulated work that decides it regardless of how capable the free tool is.

The interesting thing about this pairing is not that one is cheaper. It is that one of them has nothing to sell you. DeepSeek’s chat product is free outright — no Plus tier, no paywall on uploads or long conversations — which means nothing is being withheld to create an upgrade path. Claude costs $20 a month and is worth it for specific reasons.

Those reasons are narrower than the marketing on either side suggests. DeepSeek is strong exactly where answers are checkable: reasoning, mathematics, code. Its models are open-weight, so those claims can be tested by people who do not work there. Claude’s advantage is prose — tone, structure, restraint — and it shows the moment the output is something another person has to read.

For most professional users, though, the decision is made before either of those matters. DeepSeek processes data under Chinese jurisdiction. For personal work that is a call you make; for client work, regulated industries or anything under an NDA, it is a rule you inherit, and it disqualifies the free option no matter how good it is.

One thing to know before subscribing to Claude, because nobody says it at the point of sale: the limit is a five-hour rolling window shared across web, mobile and Claude Code, not a monthly allowance, and long threads cost more per message than short ones.

What actually decides it

One of them has no paid tier to sell you
DeepSeek's chat product is free outright — no Plus plan, no paywall on uploads or long conversations, with web search and history included. That is a different proposition from a generous free tier, because there is nothing to upgrade to and therefore nothing being held back to make you. The API is billed per token, but that is for developers, not for the person using the chat.
Jurisdiction, before capability
DeepSeek processes data under Chinese jurisdiction. For personal projects that is a judgement you make; for client work, regulated industries or anything under an NDA it is usually a rule you inherit. This is the most common reason a genuinely capable free tool cannot be adopted, and no amount of benchmark performance changes it.
Reasoning and code versus writing
DeepSeek is strong where the answer is checkable — reasoning chains, code, mathematics — which is also where an open-weight model's claims can be verified independently. Claude's advantage is in prose: tone, structure, and knowing when to stop. If your output is a document somebody reads, that gap is the whole product.
Open weights change what you can verify
DeepSeek publishes open-weight models, so the research is public and the capability claims can be checked by people who do not work there. Claude is closed. This matters if you need to audit, self-host or simply distrust marketing; it matters not at all if you want the best answer in a browser tab.
Claude's limit is a rolling window
Claude Pro's cap resets on a five-hour rolling window shared across web, mobile and Claude Code, rather than being a monthly allowance — and long threads cost more per message because the whole conversation is reprocessed each turn. Nobody explains this at the point of sale, and it is the main source of complaints about a plan that is otherwise good value.

DeepSeek vs Claude FAQ

Is DeepSeek completely free?
The chat product is, and that is unusual: no consumer paid tier exists, so file uploads, web search, saved history and long conversations are all included at no cost. Developers pay per token through the API, which is a separate thing from the assistant most people mean.
Is DeepSeek safe to use for work?
It depends on rules you may not control. Data is processed under Chinese jurisdiction, so for client work, regulated sectors or anything under an NDA the answer is often already written into a policy. Check before you build a workflow on it — this is the practical blocker far more often than capability is.
Which is better at coding?
DeepSeek is genuinely competitive on code and reasoning, which is remarkable for a free product. Claude is stronger at explaining what it did and at the long-context work of moving through an unfamiliar codebase. For a dedicated coding setup, neither is the answer — see our best AI coding tools ranking.
Why would I pay $20 for Claude when DeepSeek is free?
For three reasons, and none of them is raw capability: writing quality, the ecosystem around the model, and a jurisdiction your employer will accept. If none of those apply to you, the free tool is the better tool, and we would rather say so.
Are open weights a real advantage for a normal user?
Indirectly. You are unlikely to run a model yourself, but open weights mean claims can be tested by outsiders, the research is public, and the tool cannot silently become something else. It is a reason to trust a number, not a feature you use.
