Look at that last cell again. Five ten-second clips a month on a paid plan is the honest shape of this category, and it is nobody’s marketing message.
The cost model, stated plainly
With text, a bad answer costs approximately nothing. You reroll, shrug, move on.
With video, a bad clip costs the same as a good one. So your real unit is not “cost per clip” but cost per usable clip, and that multiplier is set by how often you get what you wanted. For a hard shot — specific motion, specific lighting, a person doing a specific thing — three or four attempts is normal.
Two practical consequences:
Plan the shot before you spend. Decide the framing, the motion and the length in your head or on paper. A generated clip you are going to reject anyway is pure cost, and you can reject most of them before generating.
Buy packs if your usage is lumpy. Kling’s purchased credit packs stay valid for two years, while its subscription credits expire at the end of each cycle. Runway has no rollover below its top plan. If you work in bursts — a project this month, nothing next — a subscription is quietly the expensive option.
How to waste fewer credits
Start from an image, not a sentence. This is the highest-leverage technique in AI video. Generate or choose a still you already like, then animate it. You have removed every decision about composition, colour and subject from the video model, which is exactly where it is least reliable. Kling is particularly strong here, and it is the reason it punches above its price.
Keep clips short. Motion coherence degrades with length, and longer generations cost more. Several three-second shots cut together look better than one ten-second shot that drifts — and this is also how real footage is edited.
Describe the camera, not just the scene. “Slow push in”, “locked off”, “handheld, slight drift” tell the model what the shot is. Without that you get the model’s default, which is usually a slow drifting zoom, which is why so much AI video looks identical.
Do not ask for dialogue or hands. These remain the two least reliable things in the medium. Frame them out; you will save both credits and embarrassment.
Generate the hardest shot first. If the sequence depends on one difficult shot working, find out on day one rather than after you have spent the budget on easy ones.
Which tool for which job

One thing to watch: models get retired
Veo 3 was deprecated and shut down on 30 June 2026, roughly a year after it launched.
That is not a criticism of Google specifically — it is the tempo of the whole category. The practical lesson is that a workflow built tightly around one model version has a shelf life, and anything you need to reproduce months later should be exported and archived, not left living inside a tool. Save the output. Save the prompt and the settings beside it.
The honest summary
AI video in 2026 is genuinely good and genuinely expensive per usable second. It is excellent for b-roll, backgrounds, concept work and short social clips. It is still unreliable for anything where a named person must do a named thing.
Treat your subscription as a budget for iteration, not a quota of finished clips, and the tools stop being disappointing — because you stopped expecting something they never sold.
