What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is the tool that made generative AI mainstream, and it’s still the best all-rounder. It writes, edits, brainstorms, explains, and codes — and on paid plans it browses the web, analyses files and images, and generates pictures. For most people it’s the one AI to start with: the free tier is genuinely capable, and the interface is the simplest way to just ask an AI without learning prompt tricks. Power users lean on Custom GPTs, voice mode and its data-analysis skills. It isn’t flawless — it can still state wrong facts with total confidence — but as a daily thinking and writing partner, nothing is more versatile.

What ChatGPT is good at
- Drafting and editing anything written — emails, applications, reports, posts
- Explaining a document, contract or dataset you have uploaded
- Working through a problem out loud when you are stuck on how to start
- Turning messy notes into a structured outline
Turn a rough brain-dump into a finished draft
- Paste your unstructured notes and say: "Organise this into an outline. Do not write prose yet."
- Fix the outline yourself. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that decides quality.
- Say: "Write section 2 only, in my voice. Short sentences, no adjectives."
- Work section by section. Asking for the whole piece at once is what produces generic output.
- Finish with: "What have I claimed here that I cannot back up?" — a genuinely useful self-check.
Who should skip ChatGPT
- Anyone who needs guaranteed-current facts. It will state outdated things with total confidence, and browsing does not fully fix that.
- People working with confidential client or patient data on the free tier, where privacy controls are thinnest.
- Anyone wanting a citation trail — use Perplexity or Elicit instead.

- Is ChatGPT free?
- Yes, and the free tier is genuinely usable. You get the default model with a rolling message allowance; when you exceed it you are moved to a lighter model until it resets. Most people only need Plus once they are using it daily for work.
- What is ChatGPT Go, and does it have ads?
- Go is a cheaper tier between Free and Plus, and OpenAI's own pricing page attaches a notice to it that appears on no other plan: "This plan may include ads." It buys more GPT-5.5 Instant access, more messages and uploads, more image creation and longer memory — but not the GPT-5.6 reasoning models, Projects, scheduled tasks or Custom GPTs, which start at Plus. Verified 2 August 2026. If an ad-free experience matters to you, that notice is the reason to compare Go against Plus rather than against Free.
- Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month?
- If you use it most days for work, yes — the higher limits, GPT-5.6 reasoning, Projects and file analysis justify it. If you use it a few times a week for casual questions, stay on free, and look at Go before Plus if cost is the constraint.
- Is there free access for teachers or students?
- Yes for US K-12 teachers: OpenAI offers ChatGPT for Teachers free to verified US K-12 educators through June 2027, with enhanced security and privacy controls. Universities have a separate paid plan, ChatGPT Edu. Nonprofits can get up to 75% off Business or Enterprise. All confirmed on OpenAI's pricing page on 2 August 2026.
- Can ChatGPT access the internet?
- On paid plans it can browse. Treat it as a starting point rather than a source: it summarises what it finds and can still misread a page.
- Does ChatGPT train on my conversations?
- On consumer plans you can turn this off in settings. Team and Enterprise exclude your data by default. If the material is genuinely sensitive, do not paste it in regardless of the setting.
